The first snow has fallen on the Pirin Mountains, and I am getting properly excited for the ski season ahead. While most people flying into Sofia head straight for Bansko, I want to open up a question: could a night or two in the capital make your ski trip even better?
More than an airport stop
Sofia is where many Bansko trips begin and end, but it deserves more than a quick look from the transfer window. Bulgaria’s capital has history, concerts, bars, restaurants, craft beer, wine and a much livelier evening scene than many first-time visitors expect.
Whether you add Sofia at the beginning of your trip or save it for the end, an overnight stay gives you time to see a different side of Bulgaria. It can be a relaxed way to arrive before the mountain, or a good final chapter before an early flight home.
What to do with a spare day in Sofia
Start around the National Palace of Culture and Bulgaria Square, then explore on foot. The Sofia Free Tour is an easy introduction to the city’s history and landmarks. Afterwards, make your own plan: a restaurant, a wine bar, craft beer, a concert, or simply a long walk through the centre.
There is always something happening in a capital city, and that is exactly the appeal. Sofia can be as busy or as relaxed as you want it to be.
Transfers still work around your plans
You do not need to choose between a city stay and an easy journey to Bansko. I can arrange a transfer from Sofia Airport or directly from your Sofia hotel at the same price. If you are booking a hotel pick-up, enter your flight number as 0000 and add the hotel name in the booking comments.
You can book your Bansko transfers, ski or snowboard hire and lessons at book.banskoblog.com. The free Bansko Blog app is also there to make planning easier before and during your trip.
What would you add to Sofia?
If you have built Sofia into a Bansko trip before, I would love to know what made it worthwhile for you: the food, nightlife, a favourite bar, a concert or something else entirely. Leave your tips in the comments.
The Pirin is starting to turn white. Ski season is getting closer — and Sofia might be the perfect way to make the journey feel like more than just a transfer.
