The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Bulgaria as a nation state is one of if not the oldest in Europe. Bansko in the Razlog Valley dates from the early periods of the Roman Empire. Baniçka (Bansko’s former name) was a part of the Ottoman Empire until, by the First Balkan War of 1912, it was incorporated into Bulgaria.

Bansko was and remains substantial in size but has now grown to encompass a new town of apartments, hotels and leisure facilities to serve its growing winter and summer tourist seasons.

Bansko area

Bansko sits below the Pirin mountain range which rises to almost 3000 meters (Vihren peak 2914 m.) with a ski area served by at present 14 lifts A new gondola lift was built in 2003 that takes you up to the main ski area in two stages offering on and off piste pleasure for skiers and boarders. Other lifts are planned.

In summer there is mountain walking, trekking (there are many high mountain lakes), mountain biking and white water rafting. Trips can be taken to many places of interest in this fascinating area of the Balkans: monasteries, hot springs, a bear park and its many secluded villages in the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopi mountain ranges.

The après ski life is varied. In the old town there are the taverns or Mehanas offering traditional Bulgarian cuisine and in the bars and hotels nearer the ski area there is a variety of international cuisine on offer. There are night clubs, sports bars an ice rink and the usual parades of shops and a market. In August each year Bansko is home to an International Jazz festival.
