Rila Monastery Bulgaria

The Rila Monastery tour from Bansko is a top excursion, and for good reason. Just an hour and a half from Bansko, the impressive monastery of St. Ivan Rilski was built on the site of the old marsh in 927 – 941 by Ivan Rilski in the Rila Mountain. The history and the location combine to make the Rila Monastery Tour an unmissable part of your time in Bansko.

In the courtyard of today’s monastery, a defensive tower and a small church of a local feudal lord were erected in 1335. Tsar Ivan Shishman (1371 -1393) issued a certificate in 1378, signed and stamped with a gold seal, which gave the monastery feudal possessions to twenty villages together with their lands.

A tax register from 1520 to 1521 shows twenty one monks living there, with its founding the monastery became a literary and educational centre. In August 1778 the monastery was devastated by robbers and in 1818 the monastery was renovated thoroughly.

The average height of the pyramids is between 7 and 10 meters, formed by the melting of the glaciers.

You’ll also go to the Cave of Ivan Rilski. The legend is that anyone passing through this cave receives forgiveness of all their sins. Hmmm.
