Plovdiv and Bachkovo Monastery Tour
Plovdiv is second biggest city in Bulgaria. The town is 150 km from Sofia. It is situated on the two banks of the Maritsa river and is famous for its cobbled street of it’s old town, the bustling hipster area of Kapana and the longest pedestrianised street in Europe. It’s six unique hills dominate the landscape when viewed from the old town.
Plovdiv is my favourite Bulgarian city by a big margin and even more so as European Capital of Culture 2019. Everyone loves it and this is one of our most popular tours.
Around the three eastern hills the Thracians established the ancient settlement of Evmolpiass, which was later oncalled Pulpudeva. In the year 342 B.C. the town was conquered by Philip II of Macedonia and was called Philipopol. During the Roman times it was given the name of Trimontium (“town on three hills”).
The Slavs called it Plovdiv.
About 30km south of Plovdiv stands the magnificent Bachkovo Monastery, founded in 1083. Most of the complex dates from the 17th century onwards, with the Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa (1604) as its colourful centrepiece. The church is decorated with 1850s frescoes by renowned artist Zahari Zograf and houses a much-cherished icon of the Virgin Mary.
