Christmas and New Year and January School Holidays

Bulgaria: 22nd December 2018 to 1st January 2019

Greece: 22nd December 2018 to 6th January 2019

Romania: 22nd December 2018 to 13th January 2019

UK: 24th December 2018 to 4th January 2019
Ireland: 21st December to 6th January 2019

Russia: 31st December 2018 to 8th January 2019

Serbia: 1st January 2017 to 8th January 2019

My opinion: Bulgarians tend to be with the whole family over Christmas, and not in the ski resort. So the pre Christmas period until the 27th December is not as busy in Bansko as it is in Alpine ski resorts. My Baba (grandmother) said it will be a white Christmas; that’s not exactly a snow guarantee so stay tuned for my regular snow forecasts from the slopes of Bansko.

February School Holidays

Turkey: 21st January to 3rd February 2019

Russia: 20th February to 25th February 2019

Bulgaria: 22nd February to 5th March 2019

Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Men (Alpine Combination, Giant Slalom and Giant Slalom) 2019  22nd February to 24th February

Romania: 2nd February to 10th February 2019

Serbia: 1st to 17th February 2019

*England: 16th February 2019 to 24th February 2019 and a few areas 23rd February to 1st March

*Scotland: 9th February 2017 to 17th February 2017

Ireland: 21st February to 22nd February 2019

*see https://www.schoolholidayseurope.eu/school-holidays-2019-uk.html for all variations

Best time to ski in February is from the 18th February 2019 — but some state, and some private schools, have this second week in February. Remember holidays start at the weekend — so from the 2nd February it will be busy due to both Romanian, and Bulgarian, school holidays.

March School Holidays

Another fine Bansko ski day in Feb 2018

NOTE: 1st March is Baba Marta day (wikipedia link). It is not a national holiday but you exchange Martenitsa usually in the form of a wrist band, woven by combining red and white coloured threads. These are worn on that day and through March, until a stork or a bloomed tree is seen, symbolising warmer weather and well being. Or rather when they look tatty, in my case.

Bulgaria: 30th March to 7th April 2019 NOTE: 5th March is a public holiday die to 3rd March Independence Day falling on a Saturday.

Israel: 20th to 21st March 2019

Greece: from 9th March to 11th 2019 and from 23rd March to 25th March 2019

April School Holidays

UK: 8th April to 26th April 2019

Ireland : 12th April to 28th April 2019

Bulgaria: 30th March to 7th  April 2019

Israel: 20th April to 27th April 2019

Romania: 20th April to 5th May 2019

Greece: 26th April to 1st May 2019

Russia: 8th April to 14th April 2019

Serbia:19th to 22nd April and also

From 26th to 5th May 2019

When to visit Bansko?

My opinion: Visiting Bansko at anytime of the year reveals different aspects. For all winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, back country, cross country skiing, skidoo, I especially enjoy the period from 6th March until end of the ski season: expected the end of April 2019.

In January Bansko is quietest from 12th January until 22nd January because on the 21st January the Turkish school holidays start and Bansko becomes busy once more.
