Opera Fest — night one review of Swan Lake

Swan Lake, 30th August 2013; Bansko main square

I hardly feel qualified to review Plovdiv’s Ballet company’s performance of  Tchaikovski’s Swan Lake held outdoors in Bansko’s main square last night.

So I will not try.

But I’ll have to admit arrive some twenty minutes late and find seats a little too far back. Once this problem was rectified at the interval as some people left, I could truly appreciate what a stunning performance this was.

I’ll come back and update this post when I have the full details of the performers; but the recorded orchestral sound provided by monte music was impeccable. The ballerina playing Odette and the rest of the young cast put on a highly polished performance.

This was my second trip to see Swan Lake and would thoroughly recommend everyone to give it a try. Maybe like me you’ll be looking to see many times again in the future.

Black Swan

Many may have had their first glimpse of Swan Lake through the movie “Black Swan”. The Black Swan in Odile (played by the same ballerina).

She only appears in the third act, dressed in black and magically disguised as Odette in order to help her father trick Siegfried into breaking his vow of love to Odette.

This event was sponsored by the Kempinski Grand Area and Obshtina Bansko (Bansko Municipality). To have brought all this to Bansko and for free audience viewing is another remarkable achievement. I must also mention James Hughes (Avalon Hotel) who helps make all this happen. Please please have the same again next year!

Day 2 Opera Fest — Rigoletto

Tonight I’ll be back down, closer to the stage, to see the wonderful Rigoletto. Come back for pictures.

Finally I urge readers to make the trip to the main square. You can even watch your opera with a glass of wine or beer (2 leva).
